According to Carscoops, Tesla has officially surpassed Ford to become the leading automaker in terms of vehicle recall numbers in the US for 2024.
Specifically, this year, the American electric car maker has conducted 15 recall campaigns, affecting over 5.13 million vehicles.
Closely following Tesla is Stellantis, which includes brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. As of late December, this automaker has announced 67 recalls, impacting over 4.72 million vehicles.
Meanwhile, Ford – the brand that held the top spot for vehicle recalls for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 – now ranks third. This year, Ford has initiated 62 recall campaigns, affecting 4.37 million vehicles.
Ranking fourth is Honda (including Acura). While Honda didn’t make it to the top 10 in 2023, it has become one of the most recalled automakers this year, with 18 campaigns affecting 3.8 million vehicles.
Next is General Motors (GM), which includes the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands, with 33 recalls impacting 1.9 million vehicles.
BMW, along with its associated brands, ranks sixth with 1.8 million recalled vehicles. The Toyota Group (including Lexus) recalled 1.22 million cars in the past year. Rounding out the top 10 are Kia (1.21 million), Hyundai (1.11 million), and Volkswagen (1.09 million).
According to Carscoops, this list is not yet official as the statistics are up to December 20. Therefore, a large-scale recall campaign by any automaker could change the rankings.
