The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recently released its list of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award winners, with Mazda leading the way as the brand with the most safety awards for 2024, bagging an impressive 8 Top Safety Pick+ honors.
The IIHS list spans 12 categories, covering a wide range of vehicle segments such as pickups, SUVs, and compact city cars.
To earn the highest safety award, Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must achieve a “Good” rating in a range of rigorous safety tests, including the newly updated front crash prevention test. All vehicles on the list are the newest models, manufactured in 2024.
This year, Mazda secured two Top Safety Pick+ awards in the midsize car category with the Mazda3 (both sedan and hatchback versions), alongside the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, and Acura Integra.
In the midsize car segment, the Honda Accord, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Toyota Camry excelled, earning the Top Safety Pick+ title. Meanwhile, in the midsize luxury car category, only one vehicle took the top safety honor: the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
In the large luxury car segment, Genesis dominated by claiming all Top Safety Pick+ awards with its G80, G80 Electrified, and G90 models. The Hyundai-owned luxury brand also impressed in the large luxury SUV category with three vehicles: the GV70, GV70 Electrified, and GV80.
Asian automakers continued their strong showing in the small SUV category, with Hyundai, Mazda, and Honda leading the way. This year’s list also featured electric vehicles, including the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Subaru Solterra, and Genesis GV60.
Mazda once again stood out in the IIHS list in the midsize SUV category, with four vehicles earning Top Safety Pick+ status: the CX-70 and CX-90, along with their corresponding PHEV hybrid variants.
