According to Motor1, Mazda’s financial reports indicate that the Japanese automaker is preparing to launch a new gasoline-only engine named Skyactiv-Z.

This new engine will almost certainly replace both the Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X. While the former is fairly common, the latter, with its spark-less ignition technology, has not gained much popularity.

Mazda plans to discontinue the production of both these engines in the future and replace them with a new 4-cylinder engine called the Skyactiv-Z.

The Skyactiv-G engine will be replaced.

Mazda’s new Skyactiv-Z engine features a lambda coefficient (λ) of one, meaning the amount of air is balanced with the amount of fuel during the internal combustion process. This optimizes performance and reduces emissions.

In simpler terms, as explained by Motor1, all the fuel will be burned, minimizing the emission of harmful pollutants.

Initially, Mazda intends to equip the Skyactiv-Z engine in vehicles sold in the US and European markets. The company’s engineers are working diligently to ensure that this 4-cylinder engine complies with the stringent Euro 7 regulations in Europe and Tier 4 standards set by the EPA in the US.

Mazda is also working on reviving the rotary engine.

Additionally, Motor1 reports that Mazda is also focused on bringing back the rotary engine. A dedicated team was formed in February with the goal of making the rotary engine compliant with emission standards, a task Mazda admits is challenging but is making good progress on.

Towards the end of May, three Japanese automakers, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda, jointly held a conference to announce their new internal combustion engines. Toyota unveiled a high-performance 4-cylinder engine, while Subaru highlighted the fuel efficiency of its e-Boxer Hybrid engine equipped in the new Subaru Crosstrek.

It is highly likely that the fifth-generation MX-5 Miata will be the first Mazda model to feature the Skyactiv-Z engine.

Motor1 leaves open the possibility of Mazda offering an electrified version of the sports car, while also hoping that this addition will not increase the weight of the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
