Although marketed as a fully autonomous vehicle, the Tesla Cybercab can, in fact, be manually operated using a controller resembling a gaming console joystick.
Last October, Tesla surprised everyone by unveiling the Cybercab – an all-electric car with full self-driving capabilities and wireless charging technology. Notably, the Cybercab lacks a steering wheel, pedals, or interior rearview mirrors, featuring only a large central display.
However, according to AutoEvolution, at least initially, the Tesla Cybercab isn’t entirely dependent on its software, and drivers can take manual control. Instead of a steering wheel, this electric car is equipped with a controller similar to a gaming console joystick.
This information came to light when the Petersen Automotive Museum, where the Cybercab is currently exhibited, posted a video of the vehicle being driven into their premises. As Tesla’s self-driving software cannot yet navigate tight spaces like those within a building, a person inside the car has to take control.
AutoEvolution subsequently reached out to the Petersen Museum for confirmation. Their source verified that the Tesla Cybercab could indeed be driven using a wireless game-like controller, much like a remote-controlled car.
According to InsideEV, in addition to the built-in self-driving system, the Tesla Cybercab will have remote technicians monitoring and ensuring safe operations. These technicians can directly intervene in the vehicle’s functions through remote control if needed.
Nevertheless, Tesla still has a long way to go before its robotaxi becomes a practical reality. The company is currently focused on obtaining permits for autonomous vehicles in multiple US states while simultaneously working on developing its robotaxi service network.
The Cybercab is expected to enter operation by 2027. Tesla is currently seeking permits for autonomous vehicles and expanding its robotaxi service network. Additionally, the company has indicated that the Cybercab could be offered as a personal vehicle with a price tag below $30,000 (approximately 744 million VND).
