The B-segment sedan market in Vietnam currently has six models on offer, following the temporary suspension of the Suzuki Ciaz. This includes four Japanese models and only two sedans from Korean brands.

Not only do the Japanese brands dominate in terms of the number of models, but their B-segment sedans are also outperforming the Korean group in sales.

Korean Cars Lagging

In September, the Hyundai Accent sold 1,425 units, showing growth compared to the previous reporting period.

Despite the increase in sales for two consecutive periods, this performance was still not enough for the Hyundai Accent to reclaim the top spot from the Toyota Vios. The Japanese competitor saw a decrease in sales, but still managed to sell 1,757 units in October, retaining its position as the best-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam.

The Honda City maintained its sales growth in the first reporting period of Q4. With 1,670 units sold to Vietnamese customers, the Honda City remains ahead of the Hyundai Accent in the list of best-selling B-segment sedans for October.

In the latter half of the list, the Mazda2 sold 447 units in October. Mitsubishi Attrage sales increased to 260 units, while the Kia Soluto nearly doubled its sales, reaching 87 units in the first reporting period of Q4.

Thus, in both the best-selling and slower-selling groups of B-segment sedans in Vietnam, Korean cars are lagging behind their Japanese competitors.

In October, the Hyundai Accent continued to rank behind the Toyota Vios and Honda City, while the Kia Soluto remained at the bottom of the sales chart for this segment.

The Race is Still On

After ten months, the Hyundai Accent has accumulated sales of 9,625 units, while the Toyota Vios has sold 10,569 units in Vietnam. The gap of less than 1,000 units is quite narrow, ensuring that the sales race in this segment will remain exciting until the very end.

Both the Toyota Vios and Hyundai Accent are locally assembled, and therefore benefit from a 50% reduction in registration fees, valid until the end of November. Additionally, car sales in Vietnam tend to increase in the last month of the year to meet the demand for the Lunar New Year holiday.

These factors are likely to make the sales race in the B-segment sedan market even more unpredictable, and the outcome may not be determined until the December report is released.

At this time, customers purchasing the Hyundai Accent are eligible for an additional discount of 15 million VND on the Special and High-end trim levels. Sales consultants have indicated that the supply of the Hyundai Accent 1.5 AT is limited.

Toyota is also offering incentives on the Vios, with a discount of 23-27 million VND, equivalent to 50% of the registration fee, on all versions sold in Vietnam. With this program, customers buying the Toyota Vios are effectively receiving an incentive equal to 100% of the registration fee.

The Honda City currently has no exclusive incentives from the brand, but its selling price was adjusted downward in September. The three Honda City versions are now priced at 499 million, 539 million, and 569 million VND, respectively.

Since the price reduction, Honda City sales in Vietnam have continuously increased. However, with cumulative sales of 7,741 units after ten months, the model lags almost 3,000 units behind the Toyota Vios and is effectively out of the running for the top sales spot.
