The iconic AC Cobra is famous for cramming a powerful V8 engine into its compact frame. However, starting in 2026, this muscle car—or what’s left of that moniker—will also be offered with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

If the trend of downsizing engines in the automotive world hasn’t dampened your spirits yet, this news might.

Very few details have been revealed about the engine AC Cars is preparing for the Cobra. What we know so far is that there will be two variants on offer, with the most powerful one producing 395 horsepower and optionally mated to a dual-clutch transmission. Clearly, the brand will have to choose between supercharging or turbocharging to achieve that power figure from a 2.0-liter engine, with the latter seeming the most feasible.

In a chat with Piston Heads, AC Cars revealed that they’ve been working “alongside a world-leading company in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain solutions” to develop the new setup, “suiting the characteristics and potential that the GT platform offers”.

This statement has sparked speculation that the engine could be the widely-used Volkswagen EA888 four-cylinder turbo engine, found in models like the Golf GTI and Golf R. No information has been given on the number of gears the DCT will have, but it’s likely to be a 7-speed. Thankfully, the brand hasn’t forgotten its performance heritage, and a 6-speed manual transmission will also be available.

The current car is fitted with a 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8, the same engine you’d find in a new Mustang. While this powertrain is legendary, AC Cobra seems to believe that many enthusiasts want something more fuel-efficient yet still powerful.

Driving a turbocharged car is also a very different experience from the raw, classic charm of a naturally aspirated V8. To further enhance performance, AC Cars plans to incorporate carbon fiber components into the four-cylinder Cobra models, contributing to a lower overall weight. Pricing details for this new variant have not yet been disclosed.
