The EV.BUDDY self-driving wireless charging pad promises to be an optimal solution for more convenient wireless charging of electric vehicles.
Wireless charging for electric vehicles is an advanced technology that allows users to charge their car batteries without plugging in cables. This technology uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy between a charging pad installed on the ground and a receiver attached to the underside of the vehicle. However, one significant drawback of current wireless charging systems for electric cars is the need for drivers to precisely align the car with the fixed charging pad on the floor, which can be challenging even for experienced drivers.
To address this issue, Lee Dong Ju from South Korea proposed a relatively simple solution: a robot that automatically moves to the car and aligns the contact points under the vehicle’s chassis.
Having just won the RED DOT award for outstanding design, EV.BUDDY is a compact, self-driving robot capable of agile movement and sliding effortlessly under the vehicle’s chassis.
Thanks to its optimized design, EV.BUDDY can maneuver itself into the undercarriage area and then use a series of sensors to locate the charging region. Once successfully positioned, the robot elevates its contact surface to connect with the vehicle and initiate the charging process. While highly acclaimed for its aesthetics, the robot’s slim form factor raises questions about its battery capacity.
Currently, EV.BUDDY is not yet commercially available. However, according to designer Lee Dong Ju, this product has the potential to become commonplace in the future, especially in shopping malls and workplaces.
