According to Drive, Mazda Colombia has just introduced a new option for its SUV lineup: ballistic protection. This includes the Mazda CX-30, CX-5, and CX-50 models, now offering an additional layer of security for their customers.
Hatena Blog reports that select Mazda vehicles in the Colombian market can now be upgraded to Level 2 ballistic protection. This means that the cars’ occupants will be safeguarded against attacks from 9mm handguns or .357 Magnum revolvers, a significant enhancement to personal safety.
The upgrade includes the installation of 17mm multi-layered laminated glass, along with three-dimensional ballistic panels covering the entire exterior of the vehicle’s hard body shell. While this level of protection is not as extensive as that found in specialized armored vehicles for government officials or diplomats, it still offers a substantial degree of defense for civilians.

Mazda assures that the added weight from the armor will not hinder the normal operation of these SUVs. Additionally, the Japanese automaker offers a three-year warranty on the multi-layered window glass and an impressive ten-year warranty on the remaining ballistic materials.
According to Statista, Mazda was the fourth best-selling car brand in Colombia in 2023, with 18,000 units sold. It trails only Renault, Toyota, and Chevrolet in the South American country, with the Mazda CX-30 being the brand’s top-selling model.
While ballistic protection has long been an option for luxury or top-of-the-line SUVs, this market is now expanding to include more mainstream brands. Globally, customers can opt for armored versions of familiar vehicles like the Ford Ranger, GWM Tank 500, or Skoda models.
Toyota, in Brazil, also offers a similar package for some of its vehicles, including the Corolla, Corolla Cross, Hilux, and the SW4, which is the South American moniker for the popular Fortuner.
