Decree No. 168/2024/ND-CP on the Regulation of Administrative Sanctions for Violations of Traffic Order and Safety in the Field of Road Traffic; the Deduction and Restoration of Driving License Points will officially take effect from January 1, 2025.
Ever since this Decree was announced, it has sparked discussions across social media platforms, and the aspect that concerns citizens the most is the increased fines for traffic violations, which can now amount to 18-20 million VND.
Not only do many citizens fear that these fines could amount to a month’s salary, but those engaged in car rental businesses are particularly anxious and “losing sleep” due to the heightened risks it poses.
A self-drive car rental business owner from Nghe An shared that his company has over 100 rental vehicles and frequently receives numerous traffic violation notices from customers who break traffic laws. Each year, he ends up paying fines ranging from several dozen to hundreds of millions of VND. However, these amounts cannot be recovered from the clients. The increased fines have further exacerbated the risks in his business.
It’s not just car rental companies that are affected; used car dealers are also on edge. They must conduct thorough inspections before purchasing a used car, as it may have outstanding traffic violation fines. The optimal solution is to withhold a portion of the payment from the seller for about two weeks as a precaution. Additionally, when taking possession of the vehicle, dealers incur extra costs for transportation to their lot, as driving without a license plate now carries a fine of 20-26 million VND according to Decree 168.
While the business community and automotive-related sectors are concerned, the majority of citizens support the new Decree.
This Decree is expected to raise awareness among road users, thereby minimizing accidents on the streets.
Nevertheless, alongside the increased fines, many citizens also hope for improvements in infrastructure and the quality of traffic equipment such as signal lights, signs, and road markings.
