Chinese automaker Dongfeng is gearing up for a comeback in Vietnam with the launch of four new models.
Specifically, on January 10th, Dongfeng will introduce four new vehicles to the Vietnamese market: the Dongfeng Box EV (a B-segment hatchback), Dongfeng E70 (a C-segment electric sedan), Dongfeng Huge (a D-segment CUV with a hybrid powertrain), and Dongfeng Mage (a C-segment CUV available in gasoline and hybrid variants).Â
Each vehicle caters to different segments, ensuring a wide range of customer reach.
Dongfeng is not a new name in Vietnam. They previously participated in the Vietnam International Motor Show 2017, showcasing the Joyear S50 sedan and the Joyear X5 SUV.
In 2021, a dealer in Binh Duong imported a number of T5 Evo models for official distribution, but failed to attract customers, leading to the vehicle’s withdrawal from the market.
Since then, Dongfeng’s presence in Vietnam has been minimal, mainly limited to their commercial vehicles.
It is worth noting that the distributor of the Dongfeng brand in Vietnam is the same distributor for another Chinese automotive brand, Haima.Â
This raises the question of whether Dongfeng can establish a stronger foothold this time around, especially considering the challenges faced by Haima since its launch in late 2023.
One of the four Dongfeng models set to enter the Vietnamese market is the Mage, positioned in the highly competitive SUV/CUV C-segment.Â
The Dongfeng Mage offers two powertrain options: a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine producing 201 horsepower and 305 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission; and a hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 288 horsepower and 565 Nm of torque. This hybrid variant features a 4-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The Dongfeng Box, a B-segment hatchback, is equipped with an electric motor generating a maximum output of 94 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque. It offers two battery options with capacities of 31.45 kWh and 42.3 kWh, offering a range of 240 km and 340 km respectively, according to the WLTP standard.
The Dongfeng E70, a C-segment electric sedan, will compete with the likes of the Toyota Altis and Honda Civic in the Vietnamese market. It boasts a 47.5 kWh battery that delivers a range of 401 km based on the CLTC standard. The E70 is front-wheel drive, powered by a motor producing 161 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque.
Entering the D-segment SUV category, the Dongfeng Huge will go up against established rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe. It features a hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor at the front axle, resulting in a combined output of 241 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission further enhances its performance.
