BYD has officially started pre-sales of its Seal 05 DM-i hybrid sedan in China, offering three variants priced between RMB 89,800 and RMB 109,800 (USD 12,250 to 15,000). The Seal 05 DM-i is the fifth member of the Seal family and features BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, designed for the affordable family sedan market.

With a length of 4,780 mm, a width of 1,837 mm, and a height of 1,515 mm, the Seal 05 DM-i is 50 mm shorter than the Seal 06 DM-i and 20 mm shorter than the original Seal EV. It has a wheelbase of 2,718 mm.

The BYD Seal 05 DM-i boasts a sleek design with LED wave-shaped headlights, a black trapezoidal front grille, and U-shaped air intakes. At the rear, the car features a full-width light bar.

Step inside the Seal 05 DM-i, and you’ll find a three-spoke steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a central touchscreen. The crystal gear knob is surrounded by physical buttons for essential functions.

The standard Seal 05 DM-i weighs in at 1,480 kg, while the higher variants tip the scales at 1,580 kg. All versions ride on 16- or 17-inch wheels.

Under the hood, the BYD Seal 05 DM-i is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine producing 74 kW, paired with a 120 kW electric motor manufactured by BYD’s Changsha division.

The car utilizes BYD’s Blade Batteries, offered in two capacities: 7.68 kWh and 15.9 kWh. These batteries provide an all-electric range of 43 km and 90 km, respectively, on the WLTC cycle.

In hybrid mode, the Seal 05 DM-i achieves fuel consumption figures of 3.9 to 3.98 L/100 km. When fully charged and fueled, the car offers a combined range of over 2,000 km.

The Seal series has been a significant contributor to BYD’s electric vehicle sales, with 389,339 units sold in 2024. In December alone, the Seal series sold 45,937 units. The Seal 05 DM-i joins other popular models in the Seal lineup, including the Seal 06 DM-i and Seal 07 DM-i.
