Mazda has recently announced its collaboration with Panasonic to build an EV battery plant in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.

This move is seen as a significant step forward in the Japanese automaker’s electrification strategy. Once operational, the plant is expected to have an annual battery production capacity of up to 10GWh.

The battery plant will supply battery modules for Mazda’s first electric vehicle model based on a dedicated EV platform, which is being developed in-house. While the launch date and technical details have not yet been disclosed, Mazda plans to finalize this EV platform by 2027.

In the meantime, Mazda has been actively introducing pure electric vehicles, including the Mazda MX-30, an electric crossover launched in 2019. It is built on a modified version of the SkyActiv platform, originally designed for internal combustion engines. However, this model is no longer available in North America.

Recently, Mazda also introduced the EZ-6 mid-size sedan in the Chinese market. It is built on Changan’s platform and shares technology with the Deepal/Shenlan SL03 model.

In addition to sourcing batteries from Panasonic for its electric vehicles, Mazda is also independently researching high-density lithium-ion batteries, which are expected to be equipped in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles from now until 2030.

The company also plans to invest in and build a solid-state battery research facility, marking a new step towards a breakthrough in its electric vehicle offerings.
