According to the General Statistics Office’s report on the 2024 mid-term population and housing census, Vietnam’s population as of April 1, 2024, stood at 101,112,656, ranking third in Southeast Asia and 16th globally.
Compared to 2019, the country witnessed an increase of nearly 1.3 million households, totaling 28,146,939 households. The majority of the population relies on vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, and electric scooters for transportation.
Remarkably, 89.4% of households own motorcycles or scooters, while 9.0% own personal cars, reflecting a significant rise of 3.3 percentage points since 2019 (5.7%). This equates to approximately 2.533 million car-owning households. Within just five years, the number of households owning cars has almost doubled, and this trend is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the coming years.
A breakdown of car ownership reveals that 13.3% of urban households own cars, compared to 6.2% in rural areas. When considering both urban and rural areas combined, the provinces with the highest car ownership rates are Quang Ninh (17.7%), Thai Nguyen (17.4%), Vinh Phuc (17.1%), Da Nang (15.8%), and Hanoi (15%).
Wrapping up 2024, domestic car production and assembly reached an estimated 388,500 units, marking a notable 27.0% increase from 2023. Concurrently, car imports surged by 14.7% year-on-year, totaling 172,240 vehicles.
Earlier, in late 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recorded a car ownership rate of 63 cars per 1,000 people in Vietnam.
Industry experts forecast a robust growth trajectory for the Vietnamese car market during 2025–2030, as the country enters the “motorization” phase. The Ministry of Industry and Trade aims for a market growth rate of 14–16% annually by 2030, with an expected annual consumption of approximately 1–1.1 million vehicles.
