MG manufacturer SAIC has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the world’s largest battery producer, CATL, in the field of battery swapping. Moving forward, SAIC will produce electric vehicles compatible with CATL’s Choco-SEB swap stations. This agreement marks SAIC’s complete departure from its own battery-swapping network.

On January 10th, CATL’s Chairman Robin Zeng and SAIC’s Chairman Wang Xiaoqiu signed a cooperation agreement at CATL’s headquarters in Ningde City, Fujian Province. The two parties will collaborate in the field of battery-swapping technology. SAIC will be responsible for developing and selling electric vehicles with swappable batteries, while CATL will focus on producing standardized swappable batteries.

In 2022, SAIC launched its own battery-swapping network to compete with Nio. These swap stations were dedicated to the Rising-branded electric vehicles. However, Rising Auto’s cumulative sales from July 2021 to November 2024 amounted to only 67,146 units.

Due to slow sales, Rising struggled to develop its battery-swapping network. The company operated just 26 swap stations in 2024, falling short of its initial target of at least 300 stations by 2023 and 3,000 stations by 2025. It appears that SAIC has abandoned its network development and joined CATL’s battery-swapping alliance.

CATL began developing its battery-swapping network in 2022, introducing the first generation of Choco-SEV batteries. By the end of 2024, the world’s largest battery producer released the second generation of Choco-SEB batteries. These feature 20# and 25# packs with capacities ranging from 42 to 70 kWh, suitable for a range of up to 600 km.

CATL will construct swap stations across China, each capable of storing up to 30 battery packs. Swapping an empty battery for a fully charged one will take just 100 seconds. The daily capacity is an impressive 822 swaps, outperforming Nio’s 4th-generation Power Swap Stations, which manage 480 swaps per day.

According to CATL, the cost of using the Choco-SEB battery-swapping service will be 0.1 RMB/km (0.014 USD). The company aims to build 1,000 swap stations by 2025 and eventually reach a target of 30,000 stations.
