The highly anticipated Tesla Model Y Juniper has finally debuted in China, even earlier than in the US market. The new SUV will start deliveries in March 2025 with two trim levels and prices ranging from RMB 263,500 to RMB 303,500 (USD 35,950 to USD 41,400), which is approximately VND 863 million to VND 995 million.
In 2023, the Tesla Model Y became the best-selling model in China (and globally). However, in the first eleven months of 2024, it took second place, surpassed by the BYD Qin Plus sedan. Thus, Tesla rushed to launch a new variant of its top-selling model in China.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper features the latest front-end design with slim LED headlights reminiscent of the Cybertruck. The headlights of the new model are positioned on the front bumper.
These adjustments at the front help reduce the drag coefficient of the new Tesla Model Y to 0.22 Cd. The previous conventional Tesla crossover had a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd. A lower drag coefficient means greater range and a smoother ride.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper retains the signature teardrop-shaped body. At the rear, it sports a single-piece taillight and a duck-bill spoiler. It also features a sportier rear bumper.
Other exterior features include new wheel designs (19-inch and 20-inch), flush door handles, and a fresh coat of green paint. The dimensions of the Tesla Model Y Juniper are 4797/1920/1624 mm in length, width, and height, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2890 mm. It is 47 mm longer and 1 mm thinner.
Inside, the Model Y Juniper aligns with the new Tesla Model 3. It maintains a minimalist style with a 15-inch touchscreen powered by AMD Ryzen. The new SUV lacks a traditional instrument cluster, a common critique of Tesla vehicles. Instead, the central screen integrates relevant vehicle information such as speed, gear, and ADAS. There are no buttons on the center tunnel, replaced by a wireless charging pad and hidden compartments.
Interestingly, the new Model Y employs improved seating. The rear seats are 15 mm longer, and the headrests are 17 mm wider. The second row is upgraded with electric adjustment via a push-button. The Model Y also features a silver-coated sunroof and a 16-speaker audio system. A novel detail is the turn signal stalk mounted on the steering column, absent in previous Model Y iterations.
Notably, the new Model Y utilizes Tesla’s latest AI4 autonomous driving hardware. The FSD system is expected to be deployed in China this year.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper offers RWD and 4WD variants in China, both based on a 400V architecture. The base model features a single electric motor on the rear axle, producing 220 kW (295 hp), and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
A 62.5 kWh LFP battery manufactured by CATL powers this motor. As a result, the new Model Y can travel up to 593 km under CLTC conditions. The range of the base model has increased by 39 km due to a lower energy consumption rate of 11.9 kWh/100 km, an improvement of 1.1 kWh/100 km.
The 4WD version of the Tesla Model Y Juniper combines a 194 kW (260 hp) electric motor on the rear axle with a 137 kW (184 hp) motor on the front axle, resulting in a combined output of 331 kW (444 hp).
This powertrain is energized by a three-component NMC 78.4 kWh battery from LG. The 4WD Juniper can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. It boasts a range of 719 km under CLTC conditions, an increase of 31 km over the previous Model Y, thanks to an energy consumption rate of 13.4 kWh/100 km.
