Jaguar is facing a challenging situation as it announces a buyback of 2,790 I-Pace vehicles in the US due to fire risks. The issue stems from the electric SUV’s battery pack, which can overheat and ignite, leading to potential fires. While the company initially attempted a software update as a remedy, it proved insufficient, and three of the affected vehicles caught fire even after the update.

To mitigate the risk of sudden fires, Jaguar had previously advised owners to park their vehicles away from buildings and populated areas, avoid overcharging the battery, and stop driving if they noticed a sudden increase in temperature while on the move. However, the ultimate solution is for Jaguar to repurchase all affected vehicles, offering a price equivalent to 80% of the car’s value.

A manufacturer buying back faulty vehicles is often a public relations disaster in the automotive industry. However, the recent controversial launch of Jaguar’s new logo and its enigmatic message seem to have diverted attention from this debacle.

In the US market, the I-Pace is a rare all-electric sedan in Jaguar’s current lineup that will continue to be sold after the company’s brand repositioning. Priced from $73,373, the I-Pace offers customers a range of personalization options that increase the vehicle’s price.

On December 2, Jaguar will unveil the first electric vehicle concept bearing its new logo, directly competing with Porsche and Bentley’s EV offerings. The standard version boasts a range of 460.6 km on a single charge, while the SE and HSE versions offer slightly lower ranges of 450.5 km and 449 km, respectively.
