According to Reuters, global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars hit a record high, driven by strong performance in China.
Specifically, global sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars surpassed 17 million units in 2024, a growth of over 25% compared to 2023. This equates to more than 46,000 new electric vehicles being delivered to customers worldwide every day.
China continues to lead the world in electric and hybrid car sales, with 11 million vehicles sold, a 40% increase from 2023.
Sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in the US and Canada also increased by 9% to 1.8 million units.
In Europe, sales declined by 3% to 3 million vehicles, following four years of strong growth. Experts attribute this mainly to the removal of electric vehicle subsidies in Germany.
In the UK, sales of electric and hybrid cars grew by 20%.
Other regions worldwide contributed 1.3 million electric and hybrid car sales in 2024, equivalent to a 27% growth.
Analysts at Rho Motion suggest that the growth in electric and hybrid car sales is largely due to government support policies encouraging the use of electric vehicles.
In Vietnam, electric vehicle sales also achieved significant success last year, with VinFast announcing the delivery of over 87,000 units, becoming the best-selling car brand in the country.
