10 least popular car models in Vietnam in 2024 (in units)

1. Mazda BT-50: 5 units sold

Mazda BT-50

Mazda BT-50

Topping the list of the 10 least popular car models in Vietnam in 2024 is the Mazda BT-50. This pickup truck model sold only 5 units throughout 2024, a 99% decrease compared to 2023. In fact, the Mazda BT-50 has quietly been discontinued in the Vietnamese market since May 2024.

The reason why the BT-50 is no longer available in Mazda’s product lineup is unclear. Some people believe that the model has been discontinued in Vietnam due to disappointing sales performance. Others hope that this is only a temporary disappearance while waiting for the launch of the new version of the Mazda BT-50.

2. Suzuki Ciaz: 8 units sold

Suzuki Ciaz

Suzuki Ciaz

Ranking second, just behind the Mazda BT-50, is the Suzuki Ciaz, a B-segment sedan. This model sold only 8 units last year, a 78.3% decrease compared to 2023. Similar to the Mazda BT-50, the Suzuki Ciaz has also been discontinued in the Vietnamese market.

According to a representative of Suzuki Vietnam, the import of the Ciaz model was stopped in May 2024. The brand currently has no plans to resume sales of this model and did not explain the reason for its discontinuation.

Not only the Ciaz, but Suzuki also discontinued two other models in 2024, namely the Ertiga and Swift. Therefore, the brand currently offers only two car models, the XL7 and Jimny.

3. Toyota Yaris: 8 units sold

Similar to the Suzuki Ciaz, the Toyota Yaris sold exactly 8 units in 2024. Compared to 2023, the sales of this model decreased by 94%.

Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris was one of the models discontinued in the Vietnamese market in 2024. The news about the discontinuation of this model was announced in June 2024.

The disappearance of the Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift has left the B-segment hatchback market in Vietnam with limited options, such as the Mazda2 or the electric BYD Dolphin. The B-segment hatchback market has never been a favorite among Vietnamese consumers, so the disappearance of these models from the market is not entirely unexpected.

4. Honda Civic Type R: 11 units sold

Honda Civic Type R

Honda Civic Type R

In 2024, Honda delivered 11 Civic Type R vehicles to Vietnamese customers, a 42% decrease. With a price of up to VND 2.999 billion, the Honda Civic Type R is not a model for the masses. In addition, this model is only available in Vietnam through special orders and is not regularly stocked.

5. Honda Accord: 91 units sold

Following the Civic Type R, another Honda model makes it to the top 10 least popular cars in Vietnam, the Accord. This model has consistently appeared in the monthly lists of least-selling cars in the Vietnamese market for a long time, despite efforts to provide incentives and discounts by both the brand and dealerships. Specifically, in 2024, only 91 Accords were sold in Vietnam, a 56.8% increase.

Honda Accord

Honda Accord

There are several reasons why the Honda Accord is not performing well in Vietnam. Firstly, the price, which is as high as VND 1.319 billion, and the fact that there is only one version available. Secondly, the Honda Accord has not received any significant design or equipment upgrades for a long time. Additionally, the Accord is also affected by market trends, as the D-segment sedan market is no longer as popular in Vietnam as it used to be.

6. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: 94 units sold

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

The cumulative sales of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in 2024 reached 94 units, a 53% decrease. As an imported model with a price starting from VND 3.46 billion, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is naturally only affordable for a small group of customers.

In 2024, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was updated to a new generation with completely redesigned exterior and interior, as well as a new engine. Starting from January 2025, the price of this model has increased to VND 3.491 billion for the pearl white color option.

7. Toyota Alphard: 159 units sold

Toyota Alphard

Toyota Alphard

Similar to its sibling, the Land Cruiser Prado, the Toyota Alphard is also not a model for the majority of Vietnamese consumers. Therefore, in 2024, this high-end MPV, known as the “land cruiser,” sold only 159 units. Compared to 2023, the sales of this model increased by 17.7%, which is quite impressive considering the Toyota Alphard’s price range of VND 4.37 – 4.475 billion. However, starting from January 2025, the price will increase by up to VND 149 million, resulting in a new price range of VND 4.51 – 4.635 billion.

8. Isuzu mu-X: 247 units sold

The Isuzu mu-X is one of the few models in the top 10 to achieve positive sales growth compared to 2023. Its sales reached 247 units, a slight increase of 4.6%.

Isuzu mu-X

Isuzu mu-X

The Isuzu mu-X is one of the most attractively priced models in the mid-size SUV segment, ranging from VND 900 million to VND 1.19 billion. However, it has consistently appeared in the monthly lists of least-selling cars due to its less appealing design and equipment compared to its competitors.

9. Kia K5: 301 units sold

Kia K5

Kia K5

The Honda Accord is not the only D-segment sedan in the top 10 least popular cars in Vietnam in 2024. Sharing the same fate is the Kia K5. In 2024, Kia sold 301 K5 units in Vietnam, a 71.1% decrease. The presence of both the Honda Accord and the Kia K5 in this top 10 list reflects the decline in popularity of the D-segment sedan market due to the shift in Vietnamese consumers’ preferences towards higher-riding vehicles.

10. Suzuki Jimny: 437 units sold

Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki Jimny

The model in the tenth position on this list is the Suzuki Jimny, with cumulative sales of 437 units. This is not surprising, as the Jimny has a relatively high starting price of VND 789 million, while offering modest dimensions and equipment. In addition, Suzuki imports this small SUV model from Japan in limited quantities.
