According to Carscoops, a study conducted by Consumer Reports revealed that Tesla is the brand that costs customers the least after a decade of ownership.
The Consumer Reports study aimed to provide real-world data on which brands have the highest and lowest operating costs over ten years. The organization requested members to share their expenses on maintenance and repairs for the previous 12 months.
This included costs such as oil changes, tire replacements, and fixing any issues, but excluded repairs for collision damage. The study found that the difference in ten-year costs between the most and least expensive brands was approximately 15,000 USD, a five-fold difference.
Tesla was crowned the least expensive brand, with owners spending around 4,035 USD on maintenance and service over a decade, according to Consumer Reports.
In comparison, Toyota owners spent 4,900 USD, Ford 5,400 USD, Hyundai 5,640 USD, and Honda 5,835 USD over the same period. The ten-year costs for BMW were 9,500 USD, Mercedes 10,525 USD, Porsche 14,090 USD, and Land Rover, the most expensive brand, at approximately 19,250 USD.
It is not surprising that luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Land Rover are among the most expensive to maintain. However, there are exceptions, such as Lincoln, which is in the least expensive group with ten-year costs of 5,040 USD.
Carscoops also noted that the rankings of the 29 brands surveyed by Consumer Reports were not static over the ten-year period. This is because some brands offer extended maintenance packages, resulting in relatively low costs in the first year.
For example, Volkswagen ranked third in the first five years but ultimately placed 15th, with ten-year costs of 6,530 USD.
