Honda confirms the launch of an all-electric Honda Civic Type R, but the exact timing of this model’s debut remains a mystery.

Back in late 2022, Honda announced its plan to introduce an electric version of the Civic Type R. However, more than two years later, this version has yet to make an appearance, raising questions about whether the Japanese automaker had scrapped the idea.

Recently, in an interview with Auto Express magazine, Mr. Toshihiro Akiwa, head of Honda’s electric car division, confirmed that the company is still committed to launching the electric Civic Type R. However, he admitted that it would be challenging to replicate the characteristics of the current gasoline-powered version in an electric vehicle.

Based on the 0 Series prototypes that Honda recently unveiled at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, CarBuzz believes that the company’s future electric lineup could potentially match the performance of some of the top sports cars on the market today.

According to plans, Honda will begin producing an electric sedan and a large electric SUV from the 0 Series line in 2026. These will be the first models to utilize a dedicated electric vehicle platform, preceding the launch of five additional electric vehicles.

Auto Express reports that Honda’s new platform is designed to support high-performance electric vehicles, with a potential output of up to 480 horsepower. It is likely that the all-electric Civic Type R will also be built on this platform.

The current Honda Civic Type R is equipped with a 2.0L VTEC turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 315 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 420 Nm between 2,600 and 4,000 rpm. The top speed achievable by the Honda Civic Type R is an impressive 272 km/h.
