Mazda recently revealed patent images of the new hybrid configuration for the 2026 CX-5.
Specifically, the new Mazda CX-5 will be equipped with a hybrid powertrain that combines a horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engine, with an electric motor placed to its right, and a control module above. The gearbox is situated between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor.
The patent does not provide details about the 4-cylinder engine or the vehicle’s power output. However, it is likely that the engine will be a 2.5L or smaller unit, offering improved fuel efficiency compared to the current naturally aspirated gasoline engine.
Mazda is not only equipping the CX-5 with a hybrid powertrain but is also developing a new Skyactiv-Z engine. This engine is expected to replace the current Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X lines, optimizing both power output and fuel efficiency.
The current-generation Mazda CX-5 has been on the market for 9 years, and its features are now relatively outdated compared to its competitors. When pitted against Mazda’s latest SUV offerings, such as the CX-50, CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90, the CX-5 falls behind.
Based on leaked images, it appears that Mazda has made significant improvements to the front and rear of the vehicle. Users also anticipate that the in-car amenities will be upgraded to more modern offerings.
