The rivalry between the Mitsubishi Xforce and Toyota Yaris Cross in the B-segment SUV market in Vietnam has come to an end.

According to sales figures released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the Mitsubishi Xforce has emerged as the best-selling B-segment SUV in Vietnam for 2024, after the Toyota Yaris Cross stumbled.

Yaris Cross Stumbles, Conceding Victory to Xforce

With 1,823 units sold in Vietnam in November, the Mitsubishi Xforce maintained its position as the top-selling B-segment SUV.

However, the Toyota Yaris Cross experienced a surprising decline in the penultimate month of the year, delivering only 1,188 vehicles to Vietnamese customers.

As of the end of November, the Mitsubishi Xforce temporarily leads the segment and is almost certain to clinch the top spot for the year, with cumulative sales reaching 13,267 units.

On the other hand, the Yaris Cross’s slip-up in November has left its year-to-date sales at 9,596 units, trailing its domestic rival by 3,671 vehicles.

The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos took second and third place, respectively, after the Mitsubishi Xforce. With 1,330 units sold, the Hyundai Creta secured a spot in the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the market, while the Kia Seltos trailed closely with 1,212 units sold during the same period.

The Toyota Corolla Cross found 1,150 new owners in Vietnam in November, while the Honda HR-V added 578 units to its year-to-date sales.

The Mazda CX-3 and CX-30 continued to struggle, occupying the bottom spots in the sales chart for the B-segment SUV market. The Mazda CX-3 managed to sell 331 units, while its bigger sibling, the CX-30, found 201 new homes.

Heated Competition and Attractive Deals in the Final Month of the Year

With the Yaris Cross’s stumble, the race for the top spot in the B-segment SUV market has effectively ended. It is highly unlikely that the Toyota Yaris Cross will be able to surpass the Mitsubishi Xforce in December, given the significant gap of nearly 3,700 units between them.

The remaining notable developments are likely to occur in the middle of the sales chart, where there isn’t a significant gap between the Hyundai Creta, Toyota Corolla Cross, Kia Seltos, and Honda HR-V. Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-3 and CX-30 are expected to remain among the slowest-selling B-segment SUVs.

Despite the conclusion of the sales race, the highly competitive segment continues to witness attractive promotions and deals offered by automakers to captivate customers in the final month of the year.

The Mitsubishi Xforce, being the current sales leader, is offering fuel vouchers worth 10-25 million VND for all variants, except for the GLX trim. Meanwhile, the Toyota Yaris Cross provides support for registration fees, equivalent to a promotional value of 33-38 million VND, depending on the version.

Similarly, the Toyota Corolla Cross offers the same type of promotion as its smaller sibling, but only for the gasoline version, with a converted value of 41 million VND.

Kia is offering a maximum discount of 40 million VND for the Seltos 1.5 Turbo GT-Line Special Edition. The Turbo GT-Line and Turbo Luxury variants come with a 30 million VND discount, while other versions include a one-year physical insurance package.

Honda is promoting the HR-V with a 50% support for registration fees, exclusively for the G trim. With a selling price of 699 million VND, the promotional value for the Honda HR-V G in December amounts to approximately 35 million VND.

The recently launched “newcomer,” the Omoda C5, also features a 15 million VND discount valid until the end of 2024. The package includes a one-year physical insurance program and a free maintenance program for two years or 20,000 km, whichever comes first.

Anticipating More Exciting Developments in the Coming Year

With the recent introductions of the Subaru Crosstrek and Omoda C5, the B/B+ SUV/crossover segment in Vietnam now comprises 20 different models, offering a diverse range of powertrains, including gasoline, electric, and hybrid options.

The influx of Chinese automotive brands has also contributed to the segment’s diversity, providing Vietnamese customers with an array of choices, such as the Lynk & Co 06, Omoda C5, BYD Atto 3, MG4 EV, MG ZS, and Aion Y Plus.

Several new models have entered the B/B+ SUV/crossover segment, including a significant presence from Chinese automotive brands.

As competition intensifies, Vietnamese customers stand to benefit the most, initially through competitive pricing and subsequently through improvements in vehicle quality and after-sales service. Earlier this year, the segment witnessed a wave of price adjustments, with numerous models, including the newly launched Mitsubishi Xforce, reducing their selling prices.

Overall, the sales race within the B-segment SUV market is expected to witness more exciting developments in the coming year. With one of the highest numbers of competing models, the urban SUV segment is anticipated to remain a focal point in the Vietnamese market, at least for 2025.
