The B-segment sedan market is a tight race between the Toyota Vios and the Hyundai Accent. While the Hyundai Accent has consistently been the top-selling model in the first half, the Toyota Vios is showing strong sales performance in the months leading up to the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, the Honda City has emerged as the best-selling B-segment sedan, outperforming both the Toyota Vios and the Hyundai Accent in the November sales report.

Honda City’s Surprise Performance

Contrary to expectations, the Honda City took the top spot in the B-segment sedan category, with 2,327 units sold to Vietnamese customers in November.

The Toyota Vios recorded a sales figure of 2,137 units during the same period, while the Hyundai Accent sold 2,052 units to Vietnamese customers.

Almost all other models in the B-segment sedan category showed growth in sales, except for the Mitsubishi Attrage. This Thai-imported sedan recorded a sales figure of 246 units, a slight decrease compared to the previous month’s performance of 260 units.

Thaco delivered 484 units of the Mazda2 to Vietnamese customers in November, while the Kia Soluto recorded a sales figure of 106 units.

Thanks to this overall growth trend, the total sales for this segment in November reached 7,352 units, an improvement of approximately 30.2% compared to the October sales report.

Is it All Over for the Hyundai Accent?

After 11 months, the Toyota Vios is currently leading the segment with 12,706 units sold to Vietnamese customers. The Hyundai Accent is the second best-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam, with cumulative sales of 11,677 units.

The gap of 1,029 units between the Hyundai Accent and the Toyota Vios is quite narrow, but it will be challenging to close this gap, given the strong sales performance of the Japanese model in the final months of the year.

Toyota is offering a 50% discount on registration fees for all three versions of the Vios, equivalent to a savings of 23-27 million VND. This move is expected to boost the sales of the former sales champion during the last month of the year, when there is typically an increased demand for new cars before the Tet holiday.

The Hyundai Accent does not have any discounts from the manufacturer. The B-segment sedan from the Korean brand only has a 15 million VND discount offered by dealerships, bringing the price of the car down from 439-569 million VND to 424-554 million VND.

It is unlikely that the Hyundai Accent will outsell the Toyota Vios by over a thousand units in the last month of the year, as the sales of both models have been neck-and-neck in recent months. However, the market always presents unpredictable variables, and although it is a slim chance, the Hyundai Accent still has a chance to become the best-selling B-segment sedan of 2024.

The third position in the best-selling B-segment sedan list will likely go to the Honda City, which has sold 10,068 units so far this year. Similarly, the gap between the Honda City and the Hyundai Accent stands at 1,609 units, which theoretically can be narrowed, but it will be a challenging task for the Japanese model.

In December, all versions of the Honda City are being offered with a 50% discount on registration fees, ranging from 25 million to 28.5 million VND.

In the lower half of the sales chart, the Mazda2, Mitsubishi Attrage, and Kia Soluto have sold 4,550 units, 2,327 units, and 480 units, respectively, so far this year. The Suzuki Ciaz, which was discontinued mid-year, managed to sell 5 units.

The Mitsubishi Attrage currently has promotional offers on registration fees, fuel vouchers, and rearview camera or shark fin antenna, depending on the version. The total value of these promotions for the Attrage ranges from 10.5 million VND to 46 million VND.

The Kia Soluto is available in Vietnam with four trim levels, with prices starting at 386 million VND and going up to 449 million VND. The Mazda2 sedan has three trim levels, with prices ranging from 408 million to 508 million VND. The hatchback version of the Mazda2 is offered in two trim levels, priced at 527 million and 544 million VND, respectively.
