According to the latest information from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the electric version of the Defender will not be based on the current platform and may have to wait until the next generation.

According to JLR’s Commercial Director, converting the current Defender to an electric powertrain faces several obstacles. As the Defender was developed on the D7x platform to optimize its off-road capabilities, this platform may not be able to accommodate the requirements of an electric vehicle. It is challenging to create additional space in the chassis for batteries, especially while maintaining the axle arrangement and off-road performance.

Therefore, the development of the Defender EV will take more time as the company needs to create an entirely new platform dedicated to electric vehicles.

It is possible that the new generation Defender will not have a pure electric version, and JLR will instead develop a standalone Defender EV model based on a new platform, sold alongside the internal combustion engine (ICE) version.

JLR is expected to launch the Range Rover EV this year, followed by a pure electric Land Rover in 2026.
