According to Carscoops, there has been an increasing trend of people adorning their vehicles with festive lights during the Christmas season. However, this practice is frowned upon by the police, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol team recently issued a reminder that such actions are illegal.

In a social media post, the Wyoming Highway Patrol team cited a law stating that no one should operate any vehicle equipped with, or displaying, red or blue lights or devices with the capability of displaying red or blue lights.

While the law seemingly targets the colorful Christmas lights, the Wyoming Highway Patrol team also discouraged the use of white lights as an alternative.

Speaking to the Cowboy State Daily, Police Officer Jason Simmer explained that the regulations are in place for safety reasons. He stated that the colorful lights can be distracting to drivers, increasing reaction times and, consequently, the risk of accidents.

Officer Simmer also pointed out that covering vehicles with colorful lights can make it difficult for other road users to determine when the vehicle is braking.

Violating this regulation in Wyoming can result in a USD 100 fine. The fine is reduced to USD 90 if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

WBZ News reported that two drivers in Massachusetts were pulled over by the police for decorating their vehicles with Christmas lights. Neither of them was fined.

The York County Police Department also warned that Christmas light decorations on vehicles can be distracting to other drivers and are illegal in Pennsylvania. They advised residents against wrapping their vehicles with lights.
