Indonesia’s GDP growth is projected to reach 5.1% in 2024 and 5.2% in 2025, bolstered by robust domestic demand, particularly in private consumption and investment. However, the Indonesian automotive market experienced a significant downturn in 2024.

In the previous year, Indonesian consumers purchased a total of 864,543 new vehicles, a 14% decrease compared to the preceding year. Nonetheless, Indonesia maintained its position as the largest automotive market in Southeast Asia, surpassing Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The electric vehicle segment in this market exhibited extraordinary growth, with a staggering 113.4% increase, attributed to favorable government policies. Electric vehicles now account for approximately 4.5% of new car sales in the archipelago nation.

In 2024, Toyota remained the market leader in Indonesia. The Japanese brand sold 262,089 vehicles to Indonesian consumers, a 13.6% decline compared to the previous year.

Toyota retained its position as the best-selling automotive brand in the Indonesian market in 2024.

Daihatsu, a subsidiary brand also under the Toyota umbrella, secured second place. Daihatsu’s sales in Indonesia for 2024 experienced a 14.7% decline, totaling 149,375 vehicles.

Honda ranked third in the overall market, with cumulative sales reaching 86,843 vehicles, a substantial drop of 33.4%. Mitsubishi followed with a more modest decrease of 9%, selling 65,285 vehicles.

Suzuki claimed the fifth spot in the top 10 best-selling automotive brands in Indonesia for 2024, with sales of 60,089 vehicles, reflecting an 18.4% decrease. Mitsubishi Fuso, a commercial vehicle brand, came in sixth with 20,514 units sold, a significant drop of 37.1%.

Isuzu demonstrated resilience with a modest sales decline of 2.7%. Indonesian consumers purchased 18,652 Isuzu vehicles in the previous year. Hino trailed slightly behind, with sales plateauing at 13,866 units.

Hyundai secured the ninth position with sales of 9,413 vehicles, a 21.6% drop. Wuling concluded the top 10 with impressive sales of 7,466 vehicles, marking a remarkable 102.9% growth. Notably, Wuling was the only brand within the top 10 to achieve positive sales growth in the Indonesian market for 2024.

Top 10 Best-Selling Automotive Brands in Indonesia for 2024

Unsurprisingly, the top 10 best-selling models in the Indonesian market for 2024 were dominated by Toyota. The Toyota Kijang, known as the Innova Cross in Vietnam, retained its position as the most popular model, with sales of 63,689 units, a slight decrease of 4.2%.

Toyota Avanza secured second place in terms of sales for 2024, with 55,838 units sold, a 10.3% decline. Daihatsu Sigra followed closely in third place, with sales of 54,134 units, a 12.3% drop.

The fourth position was held by the Honda Brio, which experienced a 16.6% sales decline, totaling 51,133 units. The Daihatsu Gran Max PU demonstrated positive growth, with 49,000 vehicles delivered to Indonesian customers, an impressive 13.4% increase.

Toyota Cayla ranked sixth in the top 10, with 39,909 units handed over to Indonesian customers, a 12.9% decrease. Mitsubishi Xpander also faced a sales downturn, with a 19.5% decline. Xpander sales in Indonesia for the previous year stood at 31,883 units.

Toyota Rush secured the eighth position in the overall Indonesian market, with 31,752 new customers, a 19.3% sales decline. Suzuki Carry Pick-Up experienced a more significant sales drop of 28.9%, totaling 30,075 units.

Concluding the top 10 best-selling vehicles in Indonesia for 2024 was the Toyota Agya, known as the Wigo in Vietnam. This model sold 19,595 units, a decrease of 11.8%.
