In October 2023, Honda officially unveiled its new concept car, the Prelude. But it’s not just a concept car for display; the Honda Prelude will be entering commercial production. The first official images released by Honda prove just that.

This isn’t the first time Honda has used the Prelude name. The company previously sold a car with this name from 1978 to 2001.

According to Japanese media, the new Prelude is based on an improved Honda Civic platform and shares the same MacPherson strut front suspension and adaptive dampers as the Civic Type R.

Honda has also revealed that the new Prelude’s chassis will be approximately 90 kg lighter than its predecessor. Their goal is to create the lightest chassis in its class for this model. Honda aims to reduce the Prelude’s weight by 10% compared to other hybrid models currently on the market.

Moreover, the 2026 Prelude will feature a GT driving mode, in addition to Comfort, Sport, and Individual modes. The driving mode selector is located in the central control cluster, below the S+ Shift button. This button simulates a similar sensation to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s e-shift, and the car will have eight virtual gears with a maximum engine speed of 6,000 rpm.

The 2026 Honda Prelude features a shift simulation technology similar to that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

Powering the Honda Prelude 2026 is the e:HEV hybrid system with two electric motors. Honda is considering using either a 1.5L or 2.0L gasoline engine for this model.

The e:HEV technology remains unchanged, with the gasoline engine functioning as a generator and not mechanically linked to the wheels. Consequently, the car will not offer a manual transmission option.

In terms of design, the 2026 Prelude stays true to the concept, featuring sharp headlights with integrated L-shaped LED daytime running lights. Honda has also added a horizontal light bar across the front grille. The front bumper incorporates a central air intake with a black honeycomb mesh design.

The side profile retains some classic Prelude design cues, including compact side mirrors, hidden door handles, and sporty multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The roofline slopes gracefully towards the rear, meeting the sleek rear end. While the front end bears a resemblance to Toyota, the rear evokes thoughts of the Porsche 911 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. The rear features a full-width LED taillight, a rear spoiler, a black rear bumper, and a sporty rear diffuser.

The rear of the 2026 Honda Prelude bears a striking resemblance to Porsche.

Inside, the Honda Prelude 2026 offers a 2-row, 5-seat configuration. However, the rear seats are somewhat cramped. The car features sporty front seats upholstered in leather, a digital instrument cluster, a floating infotainment screen, an electronic parking brake, and electronic shift buttons.

Honda plans to relaunch the Prelude as a sports coupe by the end of next year.
