A rare sight: Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu cruising in his 1980 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

In a recent social media appearance, Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu, the well-known Vietnamese businessman and founder of Trung Nguyen Coffee, was spotted driving his classic 1980 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL through the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. According to sources, this particular 380 SL is the only one of its kind in Vietnam.

The Mercedes-Benz 380 SL is a convertible vehicle, based on the platform of the Mercedes-Benz 200 sedan (internal code W114). Designed with a focus on the North American market, it features unique details such as front lights, synthetic bumpers, and orange turn signals on the front fenders to comply with local regulations and safety standards.

With dimensions of 4,630 x 1,790 x 1,290 mm and a wheelbase of 2,460 mm, this sleek convertible stands out. The exterior of Mr. Vu’s Mercedes-Benz 380 SL is painted in a creamy hue, accented with the distinctive UN decal, a trademark of his vehicle collection.

One of the unique features of the 380 SL is its removable hardtop, although the process of removing and installing it is rather intricate and requires at least two people.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz 380 SL exudes classic elegance with its brown leather upholstery, wood trim, and suede accents. Consistent with Mr. Vu’s other vehicles, this convertible includes added conveniences such as cup holders and an ashtray.

Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz 380 SL is equipped with a 3.8L naturally aspirated V8 engine (code M116), delivering 218 horsepower and 299 Nm of torque. Paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, this setup enables the car to reach a top speed of approximately 215 km/h.

The exact price Mr. Vu paid for this classic Mercedes remains unknown. However, according to some foreign classic car sales websites, the Mercedes-Benz 380 SL typically falls in the range of $16,000 to $18,000.
