Starting today, the 1st of January, Government Decree 168 officially takes effect. In addition to increasing fines for many traffic violations, Decree 168 also stipulates the point deduction system for driver’s licenses, depending on the nature and severity of the violation.
Checking Your Own Driving Record
Each driver’s license is assigned 12 points, and the number of points deducted for each violation will depend on the nature and severity of the road traffic law violation. Through the VNeID application, drivers can check their point balance for each type of driver’s license they hold.
Firstly, users need to have the VNeID application installed on their smartphone, and their electronic identification account needs to be at Level 2 to use the integrated personal documents feature. Users also need to integrate their driver’s licenses into their electronic identification accounts through the VNeID application. For detailed instructions on how to do this, please refer to this link.
Once the driver’s license has been successfully integrated into the VNeID application, users can check their remaining points for each category of driver’s license they hold. After logging in, from the application’s home page, users can select the “Driver’s License” option and then enter the 6-digit passcode set up during the personal document integration process.

The VNeID application will display information such as the driver’s license number, issue date, issuing authority, and validity period. Additionally, the remaining points on the driver’s license will also be displayed, with a maximum of 12 points for each license.
Deductions for Alcohol-Related Offenses
According to Decree 168, driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) or breath alcohol content (BrAC) above the legal limit will result in a 10-point deduction from the driver’s license. The legal limits are as follows: BAC: 50-80 mg/100 ml of blood, BrAC: 0.25-0.4 mg/liter of breath. For drivers with a BAC or BrAC below the legal limit, a 4-point deduction will apply, regardless of whether they are driving a car or a motorcycle.
The maximum 10-point deduction also applies to driving in the wrong direction on expressways, as well as reversing or turning around on these roads. Failing to obey traffic light signals will result in a 4-point deduction from the driver’s license.

If a driver’s license is deducted to zero points due to violations, the owner will not be allowed to drive on the road until the points are restored. After a minimum of six months from the date of losing all points, the owner can take a knowledge test on road traffic law. Upon passing, the driver’s license will be restored to 12 points.
For those with a two-wheeled driver’s license, only the theoretical knowledge test is required to restore the 12 points. However, for car driver’s license holders, both the theoretical and simulated knowledge tests must be passed to restore the full 12 points.
