Mercedes-Benz Recalls Thousands of EQB Vehicles Due to Fire Risk Associated with High-Voltage Battery Fault
Specifically, Mercedes-Benz will recall a total of 7,362 EQB vehicles from the 2022 – 2024 model years, including the EQB 250, EQB 300, and EQB 350 models. All of the recalled vehicles suffer from a high-voltage battery fault that can lead to a fire risk, whether the car is parked or being driven.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), due to a combination of certain vehicle production and operating conditions, a short circuit may occur inside the high-voltage battery. This could be due to inconsistent quality issues during the early production phase or external factors such as unstable charging system currents or mechanical damage to the high-voltage battery.
In 2023 and 2024, Mercedes recorded multiple fire-related incidents involving the EQB in the Chinese market. As the root cause could not be precisely determined, the company decided to expand the recall to other markets to ensure safety.
For now, Mercedes will recall the vehicles to update the battery management software. Owners will receive notification letters starting April 1, 2025, and are advised to charge their batteries to a maximum of 80% until the software update is installed.
It is understood that the batteries used in these models are manufactured by Farasis Energy (China) and are not related to the recent recall of Audi, Jeep, VW, and Ford vehicles due to Samsung SDI battery faults.
