Mazda is working on a new all-electric SUV, expected to launch by the end of this year. A recent trademark filing suggests that this compact SUV will be named the CX-6e.

While enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the next-generation CX-5 with a hybrid powertrain – a rival to the Toyota RAV4 2026, Mazda is quietly preparing an all-new, all-electric CUV, similar in size to the Tesla Model Y.

The Japanese automaker is entering a new phase in its business strategy (expanding in multiple directions from 2025 to 2027) as part of the second phase of its electrification plan. This shift began with the launch of the EZ-6, an electric sedan derived from a Chinese model. Currently, this vehicle is available in China and will soon be introduced in Europe as the 6e, offering two power options.

Mazda’s new CUV is expected to be named the CX-6e, as hinted in a recent trademark filing. In fact, the Mazda CX-6e is the production version of the Mazda Arata concept, unveiled back in 2024. The CX-6e is expected to be launched by the end of this year.

This compact CUV will be the second product of the collaboration between Mazda and Changan, following the 6e sedan (sold as the EZ-6 in China). Therefore, it is likely to share a platform with the Deepal S07 SUV, which has both all-electric and range-extended (EREV) versions.

In terms of powertrain, the Mazda CX-6e could offer 68.8 kWh and 80 kWh battery options, delivering a maximum range of around 500 km per charge, along with a single rear-mounted electric motor capable of producing between 215-255 hp (160-190 kW). The range-extended version is expected to feature a 1.5L engine paired with a smaller battery.

Design-wise, the Mazda CX-6e may draw inspiration from the Arata concept, featuring a closed grille, production-ready headlights and mirrors, and hidden door handles for improved aerodynamics. The roofline slopes smoothly, the hood has vents, and the pillars contribute to enhanced aerodynamics, an essential factor for tall electric vehicles. Additionally, the CX-6e could be one of the first Mazda models to feature the brand’s new flat and simplified logo.

Inside, the CX-6e is likely to share key components with the 6e sedan, such as a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a 14.6-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Similar to other members of Mazda’s growing CUV lineup, the CX-6e’s cabin will be finished with high-quality materials, befitting the brand’s upscale positioning.

The CX-6e is expected to have similar dimensions to the Deepal S07, with a length of 4,750 mm and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. These measurements place it in the same size range as the newly upgraded Tesla Model Y and the gasoline-powered Mazda CX-60.

In addition to the Tesla Model Y (still the best-selling electric vehicle globally), potential rivals for the Mazda CX-6e include the slightly smaller VW ID.4/ID.5, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Audi Q4 e-tron, Peugeot E-3008, and BMW iX1. The actual competition will depend on Mazda’s pricing strategy and target markets.

The CX-6e is expected to be a global product, although its platform sharing with Changan and production in China may limit its availability in markets with high tariffs, such as North America, similar to the EZ-6/6e. However, considering the availability of the Mazda 6e, the CX-6e could still make its way to Europe and the UK.
