Volkswagen Group has released its comprehensive 2024 sales results, revealing a 2.3% decline in vehicle deliveries to 9.03 million units. Sharing the group’s challenging year are luxury brands Audi and Bentley, with sales figures taking a hit. In contrast, Lamborghini, another sister brand, achieved record sales last year.

Specifically, in 2024, Lamborghini delivered a total of 10,700 supercars to its wealthy customers worldwide, significantly lower than Ferrari’s figure of 13,752 units. However, Lamborghini outsold Bentley, another brand within the Volkswagen Group, by a hundred cars.

Bentley’s global sales dropped 21.5% to 10,600 vehicles last year, marking the end of its sales lead over Lamborghini since joining the Volkswagen Group. The brand, headquartered in Crewe, UK, has faced a challenging period.

Lamborghini achieves record sales, outselling Bentley for the first time.

Lamborghini’s performance is truly impressive. In 2016, when the Urus super SUV made its debut, the brand sold only 3,465 vehicles globally. At that time, Bentley’s sales were triple those of Lamborghini. Even before Bentley introduced the Bentayga super SUV, it significantly outsold the Italian brand. For instance, in 2014, just before the Bentayga’s launch, Bentley sold approximately 11,000 cars globally, four times Lamborghini’s sales.

One reason for Bentley’s sales decline is the discontinuation of its renowned W12 gasoline engine. Even the V8 gasoline engine is now at risk of phasing out within the Bentley family, as only the Bentayga utilizes it. Additionally, the introduction of new-generation models has also slowed down Bentley’s sales momentum.

Both Lamborghini and Bentley have planned to expand their product portfolios with new electric vehicles. However, these premium brands under the Volkswagen Group have delayed the launch of their electric cars. The Lamborghini Lanzador, a four-door, four-seat Gran Touring (GT) electric supercar with a raised ride height, will now arrive in 2029 instead of 2028 as initially planned. Meanwhile, the Bentley Urban SUV, a smaller, all-electric SUV compared to the Bentayga, is expected to hit the market in 2026, pushing back its original 2023 launch.

As mentioned earlier, Audi, another Volkswagen Group luxury brand, also faced a challenging year. In 2024, Audi’s sales dropped by 11.8% to 1,671,218 vehicles. Compared to its domestic rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi lagged significantly. BMW and Mercedes-Benz sold 2,200,177 and 1,983,400 vehicles, respectively. Audi even sold fewer cars than Tesla, despite offering a more comprehensive model range.

To turn things around, Audi introduced a new brand with a familiar name, AUDI, in the Chinese market. This brand, a collaboration between Audi and China’s state-owned SAIC, will feature a new logo and launch three commercial vehicles in the Chinese market by mid-year.

Apart from Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini, Volkswagen also owns other automotive brands, including Skoda, Volkswagen, Seat, Cupra, and Porsche. In 2024, Volkswagen was the second-largest automotive group globally, after Toyota, which sold 10.8 million vehicles.
