According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), a total of 18,893 units were sold by its members in the past month of January 2025, marking a 40.2% decrease compared to the previous month and a 1.8% dip from the same period last year. This includes 14,201 passenger cars, 4,354 commercial vehicles, and 338 specialized vehicles. Passenger car sales witnessed a 42% decline, commercial vehicles saw a 33% drop, and specialized vehicles experienced a 40% fall compared to December 2024.

Additionally, the sales performance of domestically assembled vehicles reached 9,120 units, reflecting a 29% decrease from the previous month. Meanwhile, the corresponding figure for completely built-up imported vehicles stood at 9,773 units, indicating a more significant drop of 48%.

This sales decline seems to be a common trend in the Vietnamese automobile market during the first month of the new year, which is understandable given that January 2025 coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday. This trend is further evident when examining the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the Vietnamese market for January 2025.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in Vietnam for January 2025 (in units)

Leading the entire market is the “made in Vietnam” electric car, VinFast VF 3. In January, this model achieved impressive sales of 4,000 units, reflecting a decrease of approximately 54.5%. Despite this drop, the VF 3 continues to outperform other gasoline and diesel models in the Vietnamese market in terms of sales. Its success can be attributed to its extremely affordable price point, starting at just 240 million VND (Vietnamese Dong).

Right behind the VF 3 is its sibling from the same brand, the VinFast VF 5. In January 2025, Vietnamese consumers purchased a total of 3,300 VF 5 units, a 32.6% decline from the previous month. Together with the VF 3, the VF 5 has once again played a pivotal role in maintaining VinFast’s position as the leading automotive brand in terms of market share in Vietnam for January.

Ranking third in the top 10 is the Ford Ranger, with 1,115 units sold, representing a 30.4% decrease. With these results, the Ranger is the best-selling traditional gasoline and diesel-powered vehicle in the Vietnamese market for January 2025, surpassing the Mitsubishi Xpander. Additionally, it remains the sales champion for the Ford brand and the pickup truck segment as a whole.

Following the Ford Ranger is the Mazda CX-5, with sales of 1,000 units, a decrease of 11.1%. This performance solidifies the CX-5’s position as the number one choice in the C-size SUV segment and within the Mazda family. This is hardly surprising, as the Mazda CX-5 boasts an eye-catching design, a comprehensive range of convenience and safety features, and an attractive price tag starting at 749 million VND.

January 2025 witnessed a downturn for the Mitsubishi Xpander, as its sales failed to reach the 1,000-unit mark. During the past month, this small MPV model sold only 808 units, reflecting a significant 59.3% drop from the previous month. Despite losing its top spot as the best-selling gasoline or diesel vehicle in the market, the Xpander remains unrivaled within the MPV segment. It is also the most popular model for the Mitsubishi brand in Vietnam.

The sixth position in the market goes to the Ford Territory, with 700 units sold, reflecting a growth of 14.3%. This model is one of the few in the top 10 to outperform its sales from December 2024. However, the Ford Territory remains second within the Ford family and the C-size SUV segment in terms of sales. Similar to its rival, the Mazda CX-5, the Territory enjoys a significant price advantage, with a starting price of 759 million VND.

Trailing the Ford Territory is the B-size SUV, Toyota Yaris Cross, which sold 645 units in the past month, a 59.1% decrease. Nonetheless, it retains its crown as the sales leader for the Toyota brand and the B-size SUV segment in January 2025.

The Honda City secures the eighth position in the top 10 with sales of 568 units, reflecting a notable 31.4% growth. Thanks to this increase, the B-segment sedan from Honda has reclaimed its spot in the top 10 after a one-month absence. Additionally, the Honda City has overtaken both the Toyota Vios and the Hyundai Accent to become the number one choice in the B-segment sedan category.

Ranking ninth is the Mitsubishi Xforce, with sales of 552 units, a 51.5% decline from the previous month. This drop has caused the Xforce to surrender its “top dog” status within the B-size SUV segment to its domestic rival, the Toyota Yaris Cross.

Finally, the Hyundai Accent concludes the top 10 best-selling vehicles in Vietnam for January 2025, occupying the last position. With 530 units sold in the past month, the model experienced a significant 71.5% decrease in sales. However, the Accent remains Hyundai’s most popular model in the Vietnamese market. Within the B-segment sedan category, it maintains its second position, right behind the Honda City.

February 2025 is expected to be another slow month for the Vietnamese automobile market. This is largely because most consumers tend to make their vehicle purchases before the Lunar New Year holiday. As a result, automakers and dealers are now actively promoting various incentive programs to stimulate buying activity.
