## Stopping and Parking Your Car: Navigating the Rules to Avoid Hefty Fines

Stopping and parking your car may seem straightforward, but a lack of awareness of regulations or inattention to prohibited signs can easily lead to legal consequences and hefty fines.

Article 18, Section 4 of the 2024 Road Traffic and Safety Law stipulates that drivers are prohibited from stopping or parking in the following 14 locations:

Left side of a one-way street

On a curved road or near the crest of a hill where visibility is obstructed

On bridges, unless permitted by traffic regulations

Under an overpass, except in designated stopping or parking areas

Parallel to another parked car on the same side of the road

Within 20 meters of a parked car facing the opposite direction on a narrow street, or within 40 meters on a street with one lane for motorized vehicles in each direction

In pedestrian crossings

At road intersections or within 5 meters of the intersection

At designated pick-up and drop-off points

Within 5 meters of the entrance gates of agencies or organizations with designated vehicle access roads

On roads with a width suitable for only one lane of motorized vehicles

Within the safety zone of railroads

Obstructing road signs or traffic lights

On bus lanes, sewer manholes, access points for telephone or high-voltage cables, or designated areas for fire hydrants; or on roads or sidewalks in violation of legal regulations

Additionally, Section 6 of Article 18 of the Road Traffic and Safety Law outlines regulations for stopping and parking on streets, stating: “Drivers are only permitted to stop or park as close as 0.25 meters to the right-hand side of the road or sidewalk, in the direction of their travel, without obstructing or endangering other road users.”

Drivers who stop or park their vehicles in unauthorized locations are subject to fines. Decree 168/2024 clearly outlines the penalties for such violations.

Specifically, according to Sections 2, 3, and 4 of Article 6 of Decree 168, fines for stopping or parking in the aforementioned locations range from 600,000 to 3,000,000 VND. If the act of stopping or parking on a street causes traffic congestion, the fine increases to 4,000,000–6,000,000 VND, along with a deduction of 4 points from the driver’s license.
