The World Car Person of the Year award is part of the World Car Awards, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the automotive industry. In a somewhat surprising turn of events, the 2025 World Car Person of the Year title was bestowed upon Stella Li, executive vice president of Chinese automotive company BYD.
Upon receiving the award, Stella Li expressed her gratitude to BYD’s 110,000 R&D engineers: “This award is a testament to their unwavering dedication in making electric vehicles and Super Hybrid DM-i technology accessible worldwide.”
Jens Meiners, Honorary President of the World Car Awards, commended Li’s contributions: “Stella Li has been instrumental in BYD’s global expansion. Her vision and leadership have not only propelled BYD forward but also impacted the entire automotive industry.”
The 2025 World Car Awards will be officially announced at the New York International Auto Show, where BYD models such as the Seagull/Dolphin Mini are also contenders for the World Urban Car category.
As the executive vice president and second-in-command at BYD, Li has been pivotal to the company’s growth since 1996. BYD has emerged as one of the largest automotive manufacturers globally in less than 30 years. Stella Li’s leadership has guided BYD to record-breaking milestones, including producing the 10 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) and expanding into key global markets.
Li has been the driving force behind BYD’s strategic planning and global expansion, propelling the company to new heights in 2024. A notable achievement is the brand new high-speed electric motor in the BYD Sealion 7. This is the world’s fastest mass-produced electric motor, offering powerful acceleration and a maximum speed with a single-speed gearbox, reaching 23,000 rpm – far surpassing Formula 1 standards. BYD has brought this advanced technology to the market at an affordable price, revolutionizing accessibility.
To win this award, Li beat out stiff competition from two other formidable contenders: Ralph Gilles, Head of Design at Stellantis, and Simon Humphries, Brand Chief Designer at Toyota.
