KGM Motors Unveils Korea’s First Electric Pickup Truck, Beating Hyundai and Kia to the Punch

While Hyundai and Kia have already introduced several electric vehicles to the market, neither has produced an all-electric pickup truck—until now. Step forward KGM Motors, a lesser-known South Korean automotive brand that has just unveiled the country’s first electric pickup, the Musso EV.

KGM Motors may be a new name to many, as the company re-established its brand after filing for bankruptcy in 2020. Previously known as SsangYong, they were renowned for their crossovers and SUVs, with a history dating back to 1954.

The Musso EV stands out with its unique design, featuring a single-body structure that integrates the floor and body as one, along with a long wheelbase that enhances its muscular presence. The front of the vehicle is characterized by a bold, thick hood line and a dynamic black grille, while the rear boasts a distinctive combination of taillights and the KGM logo, exuding confidence and boldness. KGM has emphasized the practicality of the Musso EV by offering a range of customization options to cater to specific user needs.

Speaking about the design philosophy of the Musso EV, a KGM leader shared, “The Musso EV adopts a simple and neat design for elements such as the lights and grille to match the image of an electric vehicle while retaining the sturdy body characteristic of a pickup truck.”

According to Korea Times, the Musso EV will be equipped with LFP batteries from BYD, offering an impressive range of approximately 401 kilometers on a single charge, as certified by South Korea’s Ministry of Environment. Potential competitors in this segment include the GM Colorado and Kia Tasman. However, the Musso EV is expected to be significantly more affordable, and KGM anticipates a high volume of orders despite the current slowdown in the global electric vehicle market.
