Automotive news source Carscoops has shared exclusive spy shots of what appears to be a prototype of the upcoming Toyota Hilux, courtesy of Headlight Magazine. The photos, taken in Thailand, offer a glimpse of what could be the next-generation model of this popular mid-size pickup truck.
While the prototype is heavily camouflaged, it reveals some notable design updates to the front and rear ends, while the side profile remains largely unchanged.
Up front, the new Hilux is expected to feature a sharper and more aggressive design. The headlights appear thinner and are likely connected by a slim decorative strip. The grille takes on a boxier shape, and the front bumper showcases prominent accent details.
Moving to the rear, the Hilux’s cargo bed has been redesigned and now features angular taillights and integrated side steps in the rear bumper.

Although the current images do not reveal the interior, Carscoops speculates that the new Hilux will likely receive a cabin upgrade with high-quality materials and advanced technologies.
Toyota has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the new Hilux. However, based on the available information, it seems that the mid-size pickup will receive substantial updates, going beyond mere cosmetic changes.
The new Hilux is expected to be built on an upgraded version of the IMV ladder frame platform, differing from the TNGA-F architecture used in the Toyota Tacoma and Land Cruiser. Improvements are also anticipated in the suspension and steering departments, along with the possibility of an enhanced ADAS package. According to Carscoops, the Hilux might even feature disc brakes on all four wheels.

Under the hood, the Hilux is expected to continue offering a range of powertrain options, including a hybrid system with a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, as well as pure gasoline and diesel variants for different markets.
Toyota has already unveiled the all-electric Hilux, which is confirmed to enter production in Thailand by the end of 2025. It is speculated that the electric variant could be based on this very prototype that’s currently undergoing testing.
In Vietnam, Toyota recently introduced an updated Hilux in May, offering three variants priced at 668 million VND, 706 million VND, and 999 million VND, respectively.
The Toyota Hilux has struggled with sales in Vietnam, failing to register a single unit sold for four consecutive months at the start of 2023. However, it ended 2022 on a relatively stronger note, with annual sales of 2,404 units, making it the third best-selling model in its segment, behind the Ford Ranger (15,904 units) and the Mitsubishi Triton (2,687 units).
