Information on the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho light rail project: The Ministry of Transport aims to commence construction on the aforementioned project, which spans six provinces and cities, before 2030.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway line, approximately 174km in length, is part of the railway network plan for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050. This line will traverse six provinces and cities, and its research and investment are expected to be completed before 2030.

Given its significant role in connecting the center of the Key Southern Economic Region with the center of the Mekong Delta Key Economic Region, enhancing competitiveness, and facilitating the supply of goods to consumer markets, the Ministry of Transport is currently developing a pre-feasibility study report. This report will be presented to the competent authorities for approval, with the goal of commencing construction before 2030.

As per the draft pre-feasibility study report prepared by the consulting consortium of TEDI SOUTH-TRICC-TEDI, the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway project will commence at An Binh station in Di An ward, Di An city, Binh Duong province.

The Ministry of Transport announced the construction of the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway project, with a target completion date of before 2030.

The line will terminate at Can Tho station in Phu Thu ward, Cai Rang district, Can Tho city, passing through six provinces and cities: Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, and Can Tho.

In the completed stage, the consulting consortium of TEDI SOUTH-TRICC-TEDI proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway line be constructed as a double-track line with a standard gauge of 1.435mm and electrification.

During the first phase, a single-track line will be constructed from An Binh to Can Tho, with a total length of 175.2km. This includes an earthworks section (76.6km, accounting for 43.72%) and a bridge section (98.6km, accounting for 56.28%).

The Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway line is designed for a speed of 120km/h for freight trains and 160km/h for passenger trains.

With this investment scale, the preliminary total investment for the first phase, including the construction of a single-track line and comprehensive site clearance, is estimated at VND 173,643 billion (equivalent to USD 7.16 billion). This includes compensation, support, and resettlement costs of approximately VND 45,675 billion (including contingency amounts).

The second phase involves investing in the upgrade of the entire line to a double-track standard, with an estimated investment of VND 64,973 billion (approximately USD 2.7 billion), excluding financial costs. Thus, the total preliminary investment for both phases is approximately VND 238,616 billion (about USD 9.84 billion), following the public investment form.
