## Dangerous Stunts on Motorcycles: Vietnam’s Strict Penalties and the Need for Road Safety Awareness
|
In the past, stunts such as wheelies or riding with eyes covered were considered violations of the law, with penalties serving as deterrents. According to Decree 100/2019, motorcycle riders who let go of the handlebars, ride with their feet, lie on the seat, or cover their eyes faced fines ranging from 6 to 8 million VND. If a traffic accident occurred as a result, the rider would be fined 10 to 14 million VND.
Since the beginning of this year, the penalties for these traffic violations have increased, including higher administrative fines and additional penalties outlined in Decree 168/2024.
Specifically, individuals who let go of the handlebars, use their feet to steer, lie on the seat, turn their backs, or cover their eyes while driving will have their vehicles confiscated. Depending on the severity of the offense, the violator’s driving license will also be deducted 2 to 10 points.
In addition to the administrative penalties, the vehicle owner and the person operating the vehicle will have their driving licenses revoked for 10 to 12 months. If the offense is repeated, the suspension period will increase to 22 to 24 months.

In addition to the financial penalty, the violator’s driving license will be revoked for 10 to 12 months. In case of recidivism, the suspension period will be extended to 22 to 24 months.
Performing stunts like wheelies or swerving dangerously is a common occurrence in Vietnam, despite the strengthened penalties. This reckless behavior persists, especially among certain groups of young people who want to express their individuality.
Establishing a healthy road culture and respect for traffic laws is not only the responsibility of the authorities but also the consciousness of each individual. When everyone complies seriously, these dangerous acts on the road can be eradicated, contributing to a safer society.
