After changing its name from BYD Tang EV to Tan EV just three months ago, the vehicle has now undergone another rename and will henceforth be known as the Sealion 08.

According to sales consultants, BYD Sealion 08 will be the official name for the vehicle starting in Q2. This comes after the initial rename from Tang, which was deemed controversial and challenging for Vietnamese consumers.

The CUV D-sized model was first introduced to the Vietnamese market in November 2024 by the Chinese automaker. As per the energy inspection label issued by the Registry Agency, the car was initially named Tang, similar to its home market version. However, the name proved to be a hurdle in connecting with local consumers, leading to the decision to change it to Tan EV before its launch.

Months after its release, the new name Tan EV failed to boost sales or create a memorable brand identity, prompting the company to rename the vehicle once more as Sealion 08.

The Sealion 08 sold in Vietnam boasts two electric motors: a 241-horsepower motor at the front and a 268-horsepower motor at the rear. It also features a 108.8 kWh battery pack, offering an impressive range of approximately 635 km.

Priced at 1.569 billion VND, the Sealion 08 is considered more expensive than many familiar SUV/CUV D-sized rivals in Vietnam, such as the Ford Everest, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Toyota Fortuner. Additionally, brand recognition and the lack of charging infrastructure are factors that potential customers may consider when deciding whether to purchase this model.
