According to Drive, Instagram account @sapphireallroad shared images of the third-generation Mazda CX-5 being tested on the roads of California, home to Mazda North America’s headquarters.

While the angle and quality of the images are not optimal, the sole picture captured reveals that the Mazda CX-5 retains a similar design to the current model. The body appears elongated, with the area behind the C-pillar borrowing cues from the Mazda CX-90 and Mazda3 hatchback.

The grille also seems smaller than its predecessor, possibly inspired by the recent design language of the Mazda CX-50.

Historically, Mazda has tested prototypes approximately one to three months before their official unveiling. Therefore, Drive speculates that the third-generation Mazda CX-5 could be unveiled as early as mid-year.

The new iteration of this C-segment SUV is expected to be developed on the Small Platform that underpins the Mazda3, Mazda CX-30, and Mazda CX-50.

Back in May 2024, Mazda confirmed that this model would feature a self-developed hybrid system, rather than the borrowed Toyota RAV4 hybrid powertrain used in the Mazda CX-50. The name will also remain as CX-5, instead of adopting a new moniker like CX-40.

Rumors suggest that the Mazda CX-5’s new generation will debut in Europe between September and November, offering mild-hybrid, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options.

With these hybrid configurations, the Mazda CX-5 will be well-equipped to compete directly with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Last year, the Mazda CX-5 was Australia’s third best-selling car, with 22,835 sales, following the Toyota RAV4 (58,718) and Mitsubishi Outlander (27,613).

According to Drive, the overall length of the new Mazda CX-5 is expected to increase by 110 mm to 4,685 mm, making it one of the largest vehicles in its segment, on par with the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail.

The Mazda CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling model globally, followed by the CX-30 and Mazda3.
