The end of the year is a popular time for families to choose cars as their means of transportation for homecoming, spring outings, and Lunar New Year celebrations. To ensure safe and fulfilling journeys, what do drivers need to check, prepare, and keep in mind?

Inspect and Maintain Certain Components of the Car

Before embarking on long-distance trips, it is crucial to inspect and maintain several components of your vehicle. This is because the car will be operating continuously at high intensity, likely much more frequently than its usual travel frequency.

The four tires, including the spare tire, battery, brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid, are essential details that need to be checked and maintained properly before the trip. It is also advisable to have tools like jumper cables, a tire-changing kit, and a tire pump readily available in the car to handle any emergencies.

Additionally, drivers should inspect the functionality of the main headlights to ensure safe nighttime driving when lighting conditions are inadequate. The signal lights at the front and rear of the vehicle should also be checked to ensure they are all functioning properly.

These inspection procedures not only ensure the stable and normal operation of the vehicle during the journey but also help drivers avoid certain violations that could result in hefty fines as stipulated in Decree 168.

For instance, failing to use or using insufficient headlights between 6 PM of the previous day and 6 AM of the following day, or during foggy, smoky, dusty, rainy, or unfavorable weather conditions that limit visibility, will result in a fine ranging from VND 800,000 to VND 1,000,000.

Headlights and signal lights also require inspection.

The same fine applies to driving a car without using turn signals or using them intermittently during lane changes.

Check Your ETC Account

Non-stop toll collection (ETC) has been implemented on many expressways in Vietnam, as well as at airports such as Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City) and Noi Bai (Hanoi).

This form of toll collection allows for road tolls, airport entrance/exit fees, parking fees, etc., to be paid through an identification card linked to your ETC account, without the need to stop the vehicle for payment.

To ensure a smooth and uninterrupted journey when driving your car back to your hometown for the Lunar New Year, it is essential to verify the status of your ETC account, the ETC card attached to your vehicle, and ensure that your ETC account has sufficient funds to cover the tolls on your intended route.
