Toyota and Lexus models dominate the top 10 spots in the list of most stolen vehicles.

Toyota is a familiar name in vehicle rankings, whether it’s for sales, reliability, or durability. And recently, the Japanese automaker has comprehensively dominated yet another chart, taking all the spots in the Top 10 most stolen vehicles in Japan.

The Japan Insurance Association has been compiling data on annual car theft rates since 2000. According to the latest statistics, Toyota and Lexus exclusively occupy the top 10 positions in the list of the most stolen vehicles in 2024.

Among them, the Toyota Land Cruiser is the only model to top the ranking for the fourth consecutive year, despite a significant increase in theft rate in the 12 months leading up to December. In 2023, the Toyota Land Cruiser accounted for only 14.7% of the 100 stolen vehicles, which rose to 27.5% in 2024. This means that more than one out of four stolen vehicles was a Land Cruiser.

The top 4 spots in the list remain unchanged from the previous survey. Specifically, after the Land Cruiser, we have the Prius (11.6%), Lexus LX (9.4%, a luxury variant of the Land Cruiser), and the Alphard (4.4%). However, the remaining models in the list have significantly lower theft rates compared to the Land Cruiser.

Another Lexus model, the RX, takes fifth place, followed by the Toyota Crown, Hiace, Velfire, Lexus LS sedan, and finally, the Toyota Voxy. But the theft numbers for the lower-ranked models are significantly lower than those at the top. Nearly 670 Land Cruisers were stolen (up from 383 in 2023), while only 21 Voxy vehicles were taken. Although there was a sharp increase in the number of stolen Toyota Land Cruisers in 2024, overall car theft in Japan decreased by 3.8% compared to 2023, from 2,597 to 2,499 cases.
