According to Carscoops, Mazda has just made a move to change its brand logo for the first time in 28 years. The new logo of the Japanese carmaker features a flat design, said to optimize display on smartphones and other digital screens.
This is also the most significant redesign since the debut of Mazda’s ‘M’ logo – inspired by the seagull in flight – in 1997, which has become synonymous with the brand over the past three decades.
At the time of writing, Mazda’s social media accounts still feature the old 3D logo. However, major Japanese news outlets like Nikkei have confirmed that the change is underway.
An official announcement is expected soon from Mazda. Carscoops notes that January 30th marks the 105th anniversary of the company’s founding, so the new logo may only be used from that date onwards. Other rumors suggest that the 2D logo will be used alongside the current version.

The 2D version of the Mazda logo first appeared on the Internet in July 2024, as part of a trademark filing in Japan.
Despite removing the metallic finish and 3D effects, the new logo retains the brand’s strong identity. The Japanese automaker claims that the flat logo looks sharper when displayed on smartphone and laptop screens.
The outer rim of the logo has been made more “rounded,” and the previously curved seagull wings have been transformed into straight, sharp lines.
Carscoops observes that while the old logo had subtle highlights and shadows that gave it a sophisticated look, the new black and white color scheme gives Mazda’s branding a cleaner and more contrasting appearance.
Mazda was founded on January 30, 1920, but it only started producing vehicles in 1931, with its first three-wheeled truck. Its first passenger car, the Mazda R360 Coupe, was introduced in 1960. The company’s logo has gone through several iterations, before settling on the minimalist ‘M’ design in 1975.
The logo with the diamond-shaped symbol was unveiled in 1991, and the stylized seagull wings have been a part of Mazda’s logo since 1997.

Mazda’s decision to redesign its logo comes at a time when the global automotive industry is witnessing similar moves from many car manufacturers. Several brands have opted for simplified logos, including Volkswagen, Audi, Mini, BMW, Volvo, Lotus, Citroen, Renault, Nissan, Ford, Buick, Lancia, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Geely, and Jaguar.
It is unclear which model will be the first to bear Mazda’s new logo. Recently, the company unveiled the Mazda EZ-6 electric sedan with an illuminated logo, but it still featured the old seagull wing design.
