The US auto market grew in 2024, contrary to the decline seen in many other countries. Americans bought a total of 15.83 million new cars last year, a slight increase of 2.7% compared to 2023, with a 12.8% growth in the fourth quarter alone.
A clear indication of the US auto market’s improvement is seen in the top 10 best-selling vehicles for 2024. Leading the pack is the Ford F-Series, with cumulative sales of 763,940 units, a 1.8% increase. This marks the 43rd consecutive year that this pickup truck model has reigned as the sales “king” in the US market. Within the Ford family, the F-Series accounts for 37% of total sales. Since 1977, Ford has sold over 33 million F-Series vehicles to Americans.
Coming in second is the Chevrolet Silverado, with 560,265 units sold, reflecting a 0.9% growth. Similar to the Ford F-Series, the Chevrolet Silverado is also a large pickup truck, indicating Americans’ continued preference for domestically produced large pickup trucks.
The third position goes to the Toyota RAV4, with cumulative sales of 475,195 units, representing a 9.3% increase. The RAV4 is not only the best-selling compact SUV in the US market but also the top-selling Japanese car in the country.
Right behind the Toyota RAV4 is its competitor in the same segment, the Honda CR-V. In 2024, Honda sold 402,791 CR-Vs, achieving an 11.4% growth. The success of the Toyota RAV4 can be attributed to the appeal of its hybrid version.
The Honda CR-V ranks fourth in the overall market.
Moving down the list, we have the large pickup truck Ram Pick-Up in fifth place, with sales of 373,118 units, a 16.1% decrease. When compared to its competitors in the same segment, the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado, the Ram Pick-Up falls behind significantly.
In sixth place is the Tesla Model Y, with sales growing by 4.5% to 313,699 units. It is the best-selling electric car in the US market for the past year.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry takes the crown as the best-selling sedan in the US for 2024, ranking seventh with 309,875 vehicles sold, a 6.6% increase.
Another pickup truck to make it into the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the US for 2024 is the GMC Sierra, in eighth place. The “twin sibling” of the Chevrolet Silverado recorded sales of 298,698 units, a slight 1% increase.
In ninth place is the Nissan Rogue, known as the X-Trail in other markets. This compact SUV experienced a 9.5% decline, selling 245,713 units. When compared to its competitors, Toyota and Honda, Nissan lags due to the lack of hybrid options.
Rounding out the top 10 is the Honda Civic, with an impressive 20.8% growth, selling 242,005 vehicles. It was the best-selling compact sedan in the US market last year, outperforming its rivals, the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3.
