According to a report by the General Statistics Office, in the first half of January, Vietnam imported a total of 3,889 completely built-up [CBU] automobiles, with a total import turnover of over 87 million USD.

Cars with 9 seats or less still accounted for the majority, with 3,022 vehicles completing customs procedures, with an import turnover of nearly 48 million USD.

Compared to the same period last year, the import of automobiles in Vietnam has recorded a growth of more than 3.5 times in volume, indicating a bustling start to the year.

The report from the General Statistics Office also showed that in the first half of January 2024, the number of CBU cars imported into Vietnam was only 1,072 units, with an import turnover of more than 39 million USD.

In 2024, Vietnam’s total import of CBU automobiles reached 173,561 units, with an import turnover of over 3.6 billion USD.

Indonesia was the largest supplier of imported cars to the Vietnamese market, with 70,728 vehicles and an import turnover of more than 1 billion USD. Thailand ranked second, exporting 63,769 CBU automobiles to Vietnam, with a slightly higher turnover of 1.24 billion USD.

Last year, the number of Chinese cars imported into Vietnam was 31,112 units, with a total import turnover of over 909 million USD.

A report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) showed that in 2024, Vietnamese customers purchased a total of 167,412 imported vehicles, up 39% from the previous year.

Despite a 5% decrease from the previous year, the sales of domestically assembled cars in Vietnam were slightly higher than that of imported cars. According to VAMA, Vietnamese consumers bought a total of 172,730 domestically assembled cars in 2024.
