At Porsche’s recent annual conference, the German automaker made a series of revelations, including its consideration of a new internal combustion-powered SUV. However, what intrigued car enthusiasts even more was Porsche’s commitment to an “additional flagship model” for the 911 family – likely to be the new 911 GT2 RS.
Porsche’s New Flagship Could Be the 911 GT2 RS of the 992 Generation
Porsche has crafted GT2 versions of the 993, 996, and 997 generations of the 911, before resurrecting the model in 2017 and taking it up a notch by calling it the GT2 RS. The 992 generation is yet to receive the GT2 RS treatment, but the pre-facelift model has included special high-performance variants such as the 911 Turbo and Turbo S, GT3 and GT3 RS, Dakar, and 911 S/T.
In mid-2024, Porsche introduced a facelift for the 992-generation model, and while it has updated the standard Carrera models, along with the GT3 and GT3 Touring, the more potent and extreme versions like the GT3 RS and Turbo/Turbo S have yet to be added to the lineup. In confirming the new “flagship” for the 911 range, Porsche stated that the car will “raise the bar even further” in the sports car segment, which is precisely what the 991-generation GT2 RS did.
Rumors of a new GT2 RS have been circulating for quite some time. In February, a screenshot from Mobile.de surfaced online, showing a dealer offering a configuration for the 992 GT2 RS. While its authenticity couldn’t be verified, it listed the car with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of 450,000 euros (approximately $489,000), likely including taxes, and indicated a 2026 launch.
Last year, a prototype of what could be the new GT2 RS was spotted at the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack. That car had the body of the current GT3 RS but was clearly not equipped with the latter’s usual 4.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine, opting for forced induction instead.
The previous 911 GT2 RS produced 690 horsepower and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque from its 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, but the supercar market has evolved significantly since 2017. Any new GT2 RS is likely to deliver over 750 horsepower, easily becoming the fastest 911 ever.
“Spending Spree”: Quaffing Millions for Auto Purchases in 2024
In 2024, Vu Chi’s approach to car purchases shifted. While some supercars were snapped up within minutes, others took months due to legal complexities. This year, Vu Chi’s spending has been more restrained compared to previous years, with a particular focus on investing in vintage cars, some of which cost just a few hundred million VND.
