In a bold move, Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronic components manufacturer, has decided to venture into the automotive industry following the collapse of merger talks between Nissan and Honda.
Foxconn’s chairman, Young Liu, announced that the company would be signing manufacturing agreements with two electric vehicle (EV) startups within the next two months. While the identities of these startups remain undisclosed, the collaboration will take the form of contract design and manufacturing services for the development of electric vehicles.
In this month’s financial statement, Liu revealed that Foxconn will commence production of the electric crossover Model C in North America in the fourth quarter. Due to rising US tariffs, Liu expressed intentions to expand Foxconn’s manufacturing footprint in the United States.
Additionally, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer is also collaborating with automotive manufacturers in the Middle East on electric vehicle software design, including the development of smart cabins.
Over the years, Foxconn has signed numerous agreements in its pursuit of entering the automotive industry. Currently, the company holds a 50% stake in the assembly unit of axle systems and chassis module production of Germany’s ZF Group.Â
Foxconn has also established a 50-50 joint venture with Stellantis to design and sell automotive semiconductors starting in 2026. Furthermore, the Taiwanese company has a deal with the German chipmaker Infineon to co-develop advanced silicon carbide semiconductors for electric vehicles.
Industry experts believe that Foxconn’s entry into the electric vehicle manufacturing arena will create significant pressure on established automakers, such as Nissan.
