Last year, news surfaced about a 1969 Datsun Fairlady in Hanoi that was offered 1.7 billion VND by a discreet car enthusiast, but the owner refused, believing that the car was rare, valuable, and difficult to repurchase if sold.
However, this 1969 Datsun Fairlady has now joined the collection of Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu, with the transaction price undisclosed but likely exceeding the aforementioned offer. Thus, “Qua” Vu has acquired yet another vintage car that is possibly one-of-a-kind in Vietnam, remaining entirely “zin” from “A-Z.”
The Datsun Sports, also known as the Datsun Fairlady in the Japanese and Australian markets, is a series of convertibles produced by Nissan in the 1960s. This series is the predecessor to the Fairlady Z and competed with European sports cars such as MG, Triumph, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo.
Starting with the S211 in 1959, the car was crafted in two generations: the first being mostly handmade in small quantities, while the second (the 310 series) was mass-produced. The second generation debuted in 1961 and continued through 1970 with the SP311 and SR311 lines.
In Japan, it represented one of the three core products offered by Nissan at their dealerships, known as Nissan Shop, alongside the Datsun Truck and Bluebird (1000).
The second generation Fairlady, known as the Datsun 2000 in export markets, was a two-seat convertible that made a name for itself, equipped with a powerful 1,982 cc overhead cam engine, twin SU-style carburetors, and a 5-speed manual transmission. Actor Paul Newman began his racing career in a car of this model.
Mr. Vu’s 1969 Datsun Fairlady belongs to the second generation, which was introduced at the 1961 Tokyo Motor Show, just months before the release of the similarly styled MGB. Unlike the handmade original, this generation was designed for mass production.
It was sold as the Datsun 1500/1600/2000 Roadster in most export markets. Notably, the 1600 and 2000 Roadsters became frequent winners in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) races, claiming 10 SCCA national championships. The 1600 and 2000 were produced until 1970 when they were replaced by the 240Z.
The exterior of Mr. Vu’s Datsun Fairlady is painted in a mouse gray color, with a red interior, and it has been a reliable companion for the businessman over the past few days.
