London Businessman Narrowly Escapes McLaren P1 Coupe Fire, Now Suing the Company for Damages
In 2017, 53-year-old David Kyte was driving his limited-edition McLaren P1 on the highway when it suddenly caught fire. The cause of the blaze was determined to be an engine oil leak. Fortunately, Mr. Kyte managed to escape with minor burns to his face and head.
This was not the first incident Mr. Kyte had experienced with this exclusive supercar. In June 2015, the car veered off the road and crashed into a barrier on the way to Le Mans, France. Following the accident, Mr. Kyte sent the vehicle to McLaren’s headquarters in Woking for repairs.
Even after repairs and warranty service, the McLaren P1 Coupe continued to have frequent minor issues, including coolant and oil leaks and electrical problems. The fire occurred just five months after its most recent service at Stratstone.
Frustrated with the dealer’s shoddy repair and maintenance work, Mr. Kyte decided to file a lawsuit against McLaren Automotive and Stratstone Sports Cars, seeking over £2 million in compensation (over 66 billion VND).
The owner of the McLaren P1 Coupe alleges that the previous repairs were not carried out with the necessary precision and technical expertise, resulting in loose bolt connections and subsequent engine oil leaks.
Mr. Kyte also accuses Stratstone of failing to properly investigate, diagnose, repair, and service the vehicle, even damaging the fuel system in the process. Moreover, he claims that the dealer did not adequately inspect or test the car before returning it to him.
The McLaren P1 Coupe 3.8L V8 is a rare supercar, with only 375 units produced globally. At the time of the fire, the car was valued at approximately £2 million (66.03 billion VND at current exchange rates).
